The Dinner Kit

Here are two articles about dinner kits, a new concept sweeping the east coast. Companies are popping up everywhere, in fact, that will deliver packaged ingredients measured for a specific recipe–pre-chopped, pre-ground, pre-marinated–so that you still get to cook without any of the shopping or prep work. One of the touted benefits is that there is no food waste–that collection of spices, for instance, that was used for one recipe and sits on the shelf for eternity. However, as one of these articles points out, you can’t beat the freshness factor in chopping your own vegetables and grinding your own spices, for example. As for waste, with extra vegetables and spices, you can exercise your creativity by inventing new omelettes, gratins, and stews. True, this trend will save you time, but at what cost?
